From day one the Klean Team has strived towards a fully ecological production cycle as part of its values, vision and mission statements. Having one of Klean's reference facilities awarded and certified Cradle to Cradle by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry LLC ("MBDC") is another approach which is differentiating the company from the competition and supports its customer's own vision to supply sustainable products to their product purchasers, partners and client base while creating a circular economy, with reduced environmental costs and risks. MBDC is a leading environmental consulting firm focused on helping companies implement new approaches to sustainability and prosperity. This certification comes after a twelve-month study of the production process and the end use of the recycled carbon and oil products.
In recent years, there has been a change in product consumer's knowledge and their need to understand a product's supply chain, from raw materials acquisition to the production process and lifecycle analysis including what impact each has on the natural ecology of the planet. Public health issues and a growing emphasis on environmental protection are now key decision factors when it comes to consumer's choice of product, and that should be no different for vehicle tires. People are learning that every dollar they spend on a product is, in fact, a vote for change, and evidence of this is now being seen in the global marketplace, which is driving the demand for greener products and more environmentally friendly production methods. This additional certification further reinforces that the products are sustainably manufactured and can be fully integrated with many traditional manufactures of rubber, plastic, ink, carbon and new tires assuring that the products offer not only a significant cost advantage but also sustainability advantage second to none. No other products from a tire pyrolysis process offer the assurance to the customer to this extent.
Beyond the Klean Team's extensive experience in pyrolysis technologies, what sets them apart from all tire pyrolysis technologies is the ability to convert the tire char into valuable end products with well established end users in a multitude of product applications. This is accomplished using proprietary technologies that produce a recovered carbon black ("rCB") to a standard unseen by any other technology providers, hence their commercial success. As far as the company is aware, the Klean Team is currently the only group re-integrating recovered carbon black in new tires with major tire manufacturers around the globe, a truly advantageous sustainable application given the manufacturing of tires consumes approximately 65% of the global carbon black production.

Esther Julier of MBDC said, "This is definitely a difficult waste stream to deal with and we appreciate the work you are doing, but we don't think our certification program is a good fit for your products". Ironically, even MBDC that leads clients beyond sustainability to positive growth through Cradle to Cradle(r) science, innovation, and leadership fell flat on its face and was ignorant to one of the biggest recycling issues on the planet, scrap tires. A decade later and with the continued success of the team, they became the first to fully integrate not only recovered carbon black into new tires but also became the first to design and now build the world's first fully integrated tire manufacturing facility that makes new tires and re-manufactures (akin to retreading) used tires and fully recycles spent tire casing into new raw materials to be used again for the whole tire and rubber manufacturing process, never mind generating heat, steam, and power from the recycling process itself to power the tire manufacturing facilities. This combined and integrated application is an industrial first, which delivers the highest possible returns both financially and environmentally. No other tire factory design on the planet can produce, low carbon footprint tires of this quality and cleanliness.
With extended producer responsibility ("EPR") programs being law in the EU, these programs are now gaining significant traction in North America and are being implemented in many jurisdictions. As an example, Sweden and Canada have already implemented EPR programs across the country. About Cradle-to-Cradle ("C2C") certification:
The Cradle-to-Cradle design paradigm was developed by William McDonough and Dr. Michael Braungart, and the certification program is administered by their firm, McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry LLC ("MBDC"). C2C assesses products on a number of criteria, such as the use of safe and healthy materials; design for material reuse and recycling; efficient use of energy and water throughout production, and instituting strategies for social responsibility. On May 1, 2007-- The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that projects seeking certification under the LEEDÆ Green Building Rating System(tm) can now earn an "Innovation in Design" points by using the Cradle to Cradle program for certified building products. Cradle-to-Cradle certifications have been awarded to The United States Postal Service, Steelcase, Herman Miller, Cabot Corp and Carnegie to name a few.
