CHP ApplicationsProviding the best integrated combined heat & power (CHP) plants
Klean Industries offers environmentally-friendly energy-generation solutions for power-intensive industries. Our global expertise and involvement includes and embraces master planning, conceptual development, technical and economic feasibility evaluations, engineering, procurement, construction, project management, commissioning, and operation and maintenance services.
We hold a particularly strong position in delivering plants that specialize in energy from waste plants that utilize biofuels, recovery fuel oils, and syn-from produced from wastes for the production of electrical energy. We have years of experience in the recovery of energy and chemicals from waste.
We can design, engineer and construct steam and power generating facilities for the petroleum, electric utility, pulp & paper, chemical, and metallurgical industries. Many of our projects utilize the output of waste-heat recovery units combined with supplemental fuel as boiler-fuel feeds. Some of these power generation systems utilize a variety of fuels in different technology configurations, using feedstock that includes coal, tires, plastics and biomass to fire gas engines and turbines. Some plants are set up with controlled extraction and condensing systems as well as combined-cycle combustion turbine systems.
We work with a wide range of customers, including independent power producers, utilities, project developers and manufacturers. Our technical expertise resides in a number of operating centers networked by advanced global integrated engineering, procurement and project management systems. Using secure communications over the internet, these systems connect all offices and project sites, and deliver our customers real 'added value' at every stage of the project lifecycle.
In recent years, we have developed a strong project group which is focused on providing consultancy, engineering and turnkey project services for customers wishing to develop CHP/Cogeneration facilities, typically in the 5 -- 60 MW(e) range, although we have the capability to handle larger outputs. The working knowledge of our host customers' systems and the process interfaces eliminates complications when moving from conceptual design through to commissioning of the finished plant.
CHP systems offer dramatic advantages in efficiency and much lower air pollution than conventional technologies. A wide variety of CHP technologies generate electricity and meet thermal energy needs (direct heat, hot water, steam, process heating and/or cooling) simultaneously, at the point of use. By contrast, conventional generation of electric power throws away much of the heat generated in production, and conventional thermal energy generation often misses an easy opportunity to generate power. These efficient systems recover heat that normally would be wasted in an electricity generator, and save the fuel that would otherwise be used to produce heat or steam in a separate unit. Due to their capture of useful energy both as electricity and thermal output (heating, cooling, steam, hot water, dehumidification, etc.), CHP systems consistently exceed the total fuel efficiency of even the best central power plants, dividing the energy content of the fuel inputs into the delivered energy content of the total useful output, and taking average transmission and distribution line losses into account.
Klean Industries can integrate state-of-the-art centralized systems (a combined-cycle combustion turbine fueled from oil or syn-gas produced from our waste to energy systems) resulting in a maximum system fuel-efficiency for delivered power in the range of 55-60%. At this efficiency level, CHP systems will effectively double the central electric systems' average delivered fuel-use efficiency of approximately 30%. However, under common circumstances, CHP systems will achieve efficiencies exceeding 70%. CHP systems achieving efficiencies exceeding 80% are frequent, and some systems have been shown to reach levels in excess of 90%. All of these power performance upgrades are already in large scale commercial applications today.
The Klean Team will make your business more profitable while at the same time these solutions will also give your company a distinct sustainable advantage.
At present, CHP systems:
- Produce almost 8% of U.S. electric power;
- Save building and industry owners over $5 billion/year in energy costs;
- Decrease energy use by almost 1.3 trillion BTUs/year;
- Reduce NOx emissions by 0.4 million tons/year;
- Reduce SO2 emissions by over 0.9 million tons/year;
- Prevent the release of over 35 million metric tons of carbon equivalent into the atmosphere.
